Travelling with a child without the other parent
If a child travels with only one parent, grandparents or a school group, border officers and airlines often ask for permission from the other parent.
🇦🇹 The finished document is always in German – only the help is translated.
Is it mandatory?
Austrian law does not require it, but many countries and airlines ask for it to prevent child abduction. Without it there may be long checks at the border. Ask the embassy of your destination country – some require their own forms or a translation.
What it must contain
Name, date of birth and passport number of the child; the accompanying person; destination and travel dates; name, address and phone number of the consenting parent; date and signature.
Tips
- Have the signature certified (district court, notary or some municipalities).
- Attach a copy of the consenting parent’s ID.
- Every child needs its own passport or ID card.
