Many carers in Austria come from Romania, Slovakia and the former Yugoslavia. These rules apply to them and to the families.

A trade of its own
Personal care (Personenbetreuung) is a free trade. Carers need a trade registration, are insured with the social insurance for the self-employed and pay their own taxes.
Written contract required
A written care contract between the carer and the person cared for (or their representative) is mandatory. It contains at least: parties, start, services, fee, guidelines for everyday life and emergencies, replacement and notice.
Further duties
- Record all spending in a household book and keep it with the receipts for 2 years.
- Confidentiality about everything you learn.
- Medication, insulin injections or dressings only if a doctor or registered nurse delegates them to you in writing.
Subsidy
The Sozialministeriumservice pays up to €800 a month for two self-employed carers (€400 each), among other things with care allowance from level 3.
