Founding an association in Austria

Cultural, sports or migrant association: founding a Verein in Austria is simple and free. You need at least two people and good statutes.

Statutes

The statutes are the association’s rules: name, seat, purpose, activities, membership, bodies, representation, dispute resolution and dissolution (§ 3 Associations Act).

Notify the authority

Submit the statutes to the association authority (state police directorate or district authority) with the details of the first board members. It is free of charge. After 4 weeks at the latest (6 if extended) the association may start and receives a ZVR number.

Running the association

• Board of at least two people
• two independent auditors
• general meeting at least every five years
• report board changes within 4 weeks
• record income and expenses

Non-profit status

Associations with exclusively non-profit purposes get tax advantages. Have the statutes checked by the tax office beforehand.
